Increase in fraud linked to the recession
In case there was any doubt about whether fraud truly increases in a recession, here is the evidence provided by CIFAS’ 2009 statistics, published last week:
'An analysis of fraud trends during the first half of 2009 reveals a continuing surge in fraudulent activity.
- 43% jump in the number of victims of impersonation - over 52,000 victims were recorded by CIFAS members,
- 74% increase in identity fraud compared with the same period in 2008 (which includes both victims of impersonation and the creation of a fictitious identity by the fraudster). It is worth noting that forged or altered UK passports are the most commonly used document in support of fraudulent applications.
- Continued rise in facility takeover frauds.'
